Hauts-de-Seine: wealth, dynamism and density

Created in 1968 during the reorganization of the Paris region, the Hauts-de-Seine department (92) covers 176 km² and has 1,624,357 inhabitants. It thus has the second highest population density in France after Paris . Its prefecture is Nanterre, but Boulogne-Billancourt is the most populated commune . With sub-prefectures such as Antony, the 92 is also known for being home to La Défense, one of the main business centers.

This department is one of the richest in France, with a GDP per capita exceeding €100,000 in 2020. It is home to prestigious towns such as Neuilly-sur-Seine, Courbevoie, and Rueil-Malmaison. But this density and mix of activities (residential, offices, industries, businesses) generates a variety of clutter: full cellars, saturated premises, outdated archives. Hence a growing need for clearance professionals capable of working in both a private mansion and an office tower.

Focus on some towns in Hauts-de-Seine

Boulogne-Billancourt

The largest commune in Hauts-de-Seine (14.70 km²), Rueil-Malmaison is located 12.6 km west of Paris and had 80,842 inhabitants in 2022, or approximately 5,500 inhabitants/km². This commune, which became "Rueil-Malmaison" in 1928, is best known for the Château de Malmaison, the residence of Empress Josephine. Its territory has been occupied since prehistoric times: Mesolithic remains (10,300 to 8,700 BC) and the remains of cave lions have been unearthed. The commune also preserves one of the three Swiss Guard barracks built in 1756

Courbevoie / La Defense

Located on the left bank of the Seine, Courbevoie is a densely populated commune (4.17 km²) with a population of 81,945 in 2022, or more than 19,650 inhabitants per km². The city developed very rapidly in the 19th century due to industrialization and the railway, then transformed in the 20th century with the development of the La Défense business district, shared with Puteaux and Nanterre. This district is now one of the largest business centers in Europe.

Nanterre

Prefecture of Hauts-de-Seine and the second largest commune in the department, Nanterre covers 12.19 km² and was home to 98,119 inhabitants in 2022, with a density of 8,049 inhabitants/km². The city is located 11 km northwest of Paris and includes part of La Défense. Archaeological excavations have revealed an important Gallo-Roman site, suggesting occupation as early as protohistory; Saint Genevieve, patron saint of Paris, was born there around 419. Nanterre is now home to the University of Paris-Nanterre, one of the largest campuses in the region.
